Can anyone think of specific luxury brand models that outsold their non-luxury brand’s counterpart?
For some reason I now forgot, I am trying to understand why the Venza never sold well and was subsequently killed off. I see them on the streets daily and they fit right in with the crossover/SUV masses. But when it was released it never came close to the same number of units moved as the Ford Edge, Nissan Rogue, and others in that class.
Then I looked at the sales figures for the Lexus RX... and it’s been consistently flying off dealer lots. The RX is based on the same Toyota K-platform as is the Camry and Venza, so I think the comparison is fair.
If you’re interested !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is a good site to check for sales numbers.

The new BMW X1 has been consistently outselling the Mini Countryman . Dunno if Mini counts as truly not luxury since their pricing is straight up insane, though.
I would also add the Acura TSX? I’m guessing it far outsold the Euro Accord , but t hey weren’t really offered in the same market.

The Venza was a new nameplate fighting for sales in a market segment that by 2008 was completely oversaturated. Meanwhile, the RX had defined the luxury crossover segment and had been building brand recognition for a decade when the Venza debuted. There’s your answer.

I know the LX570 outsells the Land Cruiser.

These days anytime a luxury model shares a platform with a lesser brand, people rally to burn it at the stake.
I think of the Impala when it came out and how it was lauded as a great car, but Cadillac made the XTS on the same platform, and the car journalists lost their freaking minds.

But is also paradoxically less luxurious. Weird.

The Venza was kinda sorta its own thing and really a more accurate comparison is RX vs. Highlander, even though the RXL with its 3rd row is a late-to-the-party new addition.

I don’t have numbers but I see a crapload of X1 and X2s versus Countrymans.

oh the LX is more luxurious.

This isn’t the same, but I know that at least in America,
the AMG versions of the Mercedes G-Class outsold the normal versions.

The Buick Rendezvous did a whole lot better than the Aztek.

M aybe the Venza looks too much like a minivan or wagon, while the RX is pretty much the definition of the crossover look.

They need to make an RX-F with the supercharged 2GR
The Venza is stupid. They should’ve just made a Camry wagon. They already have the Highlander and Rav4 which have more name recognition, plus the more-prestigious Lexus things.
The dual-sunroof on the Venza sucks since both panels are small and the bar between them is too wide. They should
’ve made it a single big sunroof. The first-gen SRX did this the best, but unfortunately the SRX itself was a piece of shit.

Infiniti QX80/Q56 vs Nissan Armada ?
At least for the past 4-5 years, I’ve seen at least 5 of the former for each one of the latter.
In the early years, it was the opposite. I think most people don’t realize Armada even exists anymore.

Similarly, the 991.1 GT3 RS outsold the normal GT3, but that’s only because the standard GT3’s engine kept catching fire and Porsche prematurely terminated production (and expanded RS production to compensate ).

I never saw the Venza as a stablemate of any of the crossovers mentioned, more so an outlier for those who like their beige a little tangy ...like the Fo rd Flex. It’s an oddball for oddballs who like vanilla bean over vanilla.
I think it’s the AWD, higher sitting option for Avalon shoppers.

That was actually my very first thought, but when I checked the numbers I was proven wrong. After 2010 it started selling quite well and the ugly facelift in 2016 helped even more. Last year they sold 32,650 of em compared to 19,207 Infinitis.

But it’s a Toyota and stealerships must’ve been pushing the Venza onto people coming off Camry and Matrix leases.
The first-gen Rogue came out a year earlier and also wasn’t very pretty, yet somehow it sold very well f rom the get-go. Last year they moved 427,000 units o_O

The RX was the vehicle that told us what a crossover was going to look like. They invented the market for all intensive purposes.

Buick Encore v. Chevrolet Trax
2018 US sales: Encore - 93,071, Trax - 89,917
2019 US sales (YTD through April): Encore - 24,606, Trax - 24,580

Wow...I guess the disproportionate amount of Infinitis must be among suburban moms who hate minivans and can’t do regular badges
. Which is my local demographic. The Mercedes R-Class sold pretty well here while it lasted.

People that don’t care about cars all buy Nissans now, not Toyotas.
Toyotas overcrowded their own lineup. Why go for the blobby not-quite-a-wagon, not-quite-an-SUV Venza when they could buy a familiar and more traditionally SUVish Highlander or RAV4?

Look at this comparison of a Highlander and Venza: https://www.thecarconnection.com/car-compare-results/toyota_highlander_2008-vs-toyota_venza_2009
Both cars start at the same price, but the Highlander offers a third row and has better interior dimensions almost across the board despite similar exterior dimensions. The V6 Highlander also gets near-as-makes-no-difference the same fuel economy as the 4cyl Venza. The I4 Highlander bests the V enza, and the available Highlander Hybrid blows it out of the water.
The Venza was barely competitive within Toyota’s own lineup, let alone the entire market.

There were several years when the Cadillac Eldorado outsold both the Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado it shared a chassis with. And in the ‘90s, most years if not all, Cadillac sold more Sevilles than Oldsmobile sold Auroras. Same story with deVilles in the ‘70s vs Oldsmobile’s Ninety-Eight and Buick’s Electra.
The Lincoln Town Car , for much of the 2000's, outsold the Ford Crown Victoria. Maybe even the Grand Marquis, as well. I’d have to check.
I’m not sure if the Lexus SC ever outsold the Supra MkIV it shared a platform with, but I bet it was at least quite close.

Sure, but car buying isn’t always a logical thing. IMO t he H ighlander doesn’t look very nice, whereas the Venza has interesting styling and is sleek by comparison. To each their own.
Regardless, I can understand the point you made about the Venza getting strangled in Toyota’s own lineup. But I’m not sure why it didn’t fare well against something like the Ford Edge. The Edge is more expensive, offers worse mileage, and is more or less evenly matched in other categories. https://www.thecarconnection.com/car-compare-results/toyota_venza_2009-vs-ford_edge_2009?trims=40030078,40029300

i think the problem with the venza was it was trying to out outback, the outback.
their whole line of commercials, condescending to 30 year olds and trying to make being 60 cool.
